Leica, black and white photography, New York - the best combination of words for Phil Penman's exhibition in Melbourne
Hey everyone! I just had an inspirational evening attending an exhibition by the amazing photographer, Phil Penman. The British-born, New York-based photographer Phil Penman has documented the ever-changing scene of New York City’s streets for more than 25 years. In his career as a news and magazine photographer, with a large body of work in such publications as The Guardian, The Independent, The New York Review of Books, among others, he has photographed major public figures and historical events. In particular, his reportage following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center has been featured on NBC’s Today show, as well as on the BBC, History Channel, and Al Jazeera, and his images have been included in the 9/11 Memorial and Museum’s archives.
His work documenting the pandemic lockdown in New York City has even been acquired by the prestigious U.S. Library of Congress, joining the ranks of renowned documentarians like Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange from the Great Depression era. It's truly an honour!
Phil's captivating street photography has been showcased in Leica galleries across New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, and London, as well as in international exhibitions as far as Venice, Berlin, and Sydney. Talk about taking the world by storm!
Not only does Phil excel behind the lens, but he also generously shares his expertise through workshops conducted for Leica Akademie all around the globe. It's incredible to think that he has been recognized as one of the "52 Most Influential Street Photographers," alongside legends like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastião Salgado, Diane Arbus, and Garry Winogrand. His impact on the photography world is truly remarkable.
